Providing NHS Services
This service is for patients:
• Aged 18 years or older with signs or symptoms of shingles (see below) presenting for a consultation up to 7 days after rash onset.
This service is not available:
• To individuals under 18 years of age
• During pregnancy or suspected pregnancy
• If breastfeeding with rash on the breast
• To patients presenting with shingles that had a rash onset of over 7 days ago
The first signs of shingles can be:
• A tingling or painful feeling in an area of skin
• A headache or feeling generally unwell
A rash will usually appear a few days later. In rare cases shingles can cause pain without rash.
Usually, you get the shingles rash on your chest and tummy but it can appear anywhere on your body including on your face, eyes and genitals.
The rash appears as blotches on your skin, on a single side of the body. A rash on both the left and right of the body is unlikely to be shingles.
